On February 14, 1862, in one of the most profoundly moving dramas of the Civil War, the 1st Kentucky Brigade reached the Kentucky/Tennessee State line. Led by Brigadier General John C. Breckinridge, the men, eventually christened the Orphan Brigade paid a heavy price for their unswerving loyalty to the concept of state's rights. When they halted at the state line, Breckinridge, attuned to the mood of his men, dismounted and, followed by his Staff and Field Officers, marched ahead of the Brigade on foot. The column slowly "Crossed the Line" into the first stage of a long and arduous journey.
